Summary Report:
The geoglyphs, which have come to be known as steppe geoglyphs, comprise a series of at least 260 Neolithic earthwork formations at Torghai in Kazakhstan.
In the book “Habe ich mich geirrt” Erich von Däniken writes the following: “… While evaluating satellite photographs of the area around the Aral Sea, Soviet geologists made a sensational discovery: from Cape Duan to the interior of the parched peninsula of Ustyurt, they found strange triangular formations in the ground… and the magazine Soviet Culture wrote: “The Cyclopean system could be explored in a length of 100 kilometers so far. Scholars are convinced that it extends even further through the territory of Kazakhstan, surpassing in extent the world-famous system of mysterious lines and drawings in the Peruvian desert of Nazca – the only archaeological phenomenon comparable to it in scale…”. And indeed, in 2007, the first geoglyph on Kazakhstan ground was discovered by Dmitri Dei,a passionate amateur archaeologist, on Google Earth Images.
Since then, Nasa has confirmed the existence of the strange shapes with new images from space. Satellite images taken from an altitude of 690 kilometers show the gigantic lines, circles and rings in Kazakhstan. They are several soccer fields in size. In total, there are five huge, very different signs. The oldest is said to be 8,000 years old.
The largest Earth sign is a huge square, the corners are connected with diagonal lines. The length of the outer line is 284 meters, the diagonal is 407 meters long. The square is formed by exactly 101 hills. The rectangle is called “Ushtogaiski square”, after the nearest Kazakh place.
Not much is known yet about these geoglyphs and research is still ongoing but these geoglyphs raise the same questions as other geoglyphs around the globe. By whom and for what purpose were the giant geoglyphs created and might there be a connection between the worldwide known geoglyphs?
