Summary Report:

The Atacama Desert, or Atacama for short, stretches along the Pacific coast of South America between latitudes 18 and 27 degrees south, roughly between the cities of Tacna in southern Peru and Copiapo in northern Chile, over a distance of about 1200 kilometers.

The Atacama Desert is about 15 million years old. Although the Atacama is one of the areas with the least water in the world, it was settled relatively early. At the few oases the peoples of the Atacamenos, the Aymara, the Diaguitas and the Chinchorros settled. The latter are best known for their mummified babies, buried more than 7000 years ago. In the 15th century, the area became part of the Inca Empire.

An important fact about the desert is unfortunately still relatively unknown but Erich von Däniken writes in his book “Zeichen für die Ewigkeit” the following: “… The pintados (geoglyphs) in Chiles Atacama Desert (see pictures) are as incomprehensible a picture book as those in the Nazca Pampas. The only difference is that in the Nazca desert more or less familiar things like birds, fish, a spider or a monkey present themselves, while the pintados in Chile reflect a puzzling geometry. There, for example, a vertical line of 25 meters runs toward the top of the highest elevation. At the very top, the line is enclosed by a circle. There are also petroglyphs in the area. For example, an armless figure flanked by animals, and rays shooting out of the figures head. I know of very similar depictions, but tens of thousands of kilometers away and made by the Aborigines, the indigenous people of Australia. They are found en masse in the Kimberley Mountains there. In the Atacama Desert, bark-like petroglyphs also exist. In the bark, two human figures can just be recognized as rudimentary outlines. And finally – still in the Atacama Desert – deities (if there should be any) with “ceremonial staffs” or just: Scepters. Comparable to the god of Sican in Peru…”. It s important to add that many of these geoglyphs are massive an can often only be seen from a high elevation or from the air.

Like the most famous nazca- lines and symbols, here we have a very similar mystery. Why were these huge geoglyphs made into the desert floor? What exactly did these strange depictions represent and what was the importance for the people who originaly created them?
