Summary Report:
The Antikythera device, discovered amidst shipwreck debris near Antikythera in 1901, revealed its gear-laden nature to archaeologist Valerios Stais on 17 May 1902. Contained within a wooden-framed case, its exact measurements uncertain but roughly 34 cm x 18 cm x 9 cm, the device emerged as a unified mass before being divided into three fragments. Subsequent conservation efforts yielded a total of 82 separate fragments, some adorned with inscriptions. Notably, four of these fragments contain gears, with the largest boasting approximately 13 cm in diameter and 223 teeth. Scholars attribute its creation to Greek scientists and propose dates ranging from around 87 BC to 150-100 BC, or even 205 BC. Notably, it predates the shipwreck, which experts have placed at approximately 70-60 BC based on multiple lines of evidence.
The Antikythera Mechanism is the oldest known advanced scientific instrument. Without doubt, it is the oldest known analogue computer made with gears and the first known Mechanical Universe and probably Planetarium. Not only was an astronomical instrument suitable for observations, but it also served as a climatological and meteorological device. Trains of bronze gears perform mathematical operations, move pointers in scales and give the positions of the sun, the moon and age of the moon, eclipses. The planets were also probably shown in appropriate displays as we read in ancient texts. Of special delight to physicists, the moon mechanism uses a special train of bronze gears, two of them linked with a slightly offset axis, to indicate the position and phase of the moon. As is known today from Keplers laws of planetary motion, the moon travels at different speeds as it orbits the Earth, and this speed differential is modelled by the Anticythera Mechanism, even though the Ancient Greeks were not aware of the actual elliptical shape of the orbit.
In his Book “Im Namen von Zeus”, Erich von Däniken quotes Professor Solla Price with the following words: “… Either the machine of Anticythera represents the advanced line of a process that has never been written about, or it is the massive intervention of an unknown genius. Even considering the widest possible limits in terms of dating, it must be clear that we are looking at something much more complicated than anything ever mentioned in ancient literature…”
In the same Book, Erich von Däniken asks: “…Why is this technical marvel not mentioned anywhere in ancient literature, although its appearance should have been on everyones lips. Where are its precursors? Without them it does not go, because otherwise no still so ingenious precision mechanic could construct the machine so to speak “from the stand”. And if these precursors existed, why do none of the poets and historians mention them, who noted down every other important detail? (There were also devices of much more modest mechanics, but this is another story). And where did the astronomical knowledge behind this marvel actually come from?…”
