The Hopi are a Native American ethnic group who primarily live on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona, United States. The Hopi are thought to be descended from the Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) who constructed large apartment-house complexes and had an advanced culture that spanned the present-day Four Corners region of the United States, comprising southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southwestern Colorado.

A Kachina is a spirit being in the religious beliefs of the Pueblo peoples, Native American cultures located in the south-western part of the United States. In the Pueblo cultures, kachina rites are practiced by the Hopi, Zuni, Hopi-Tewa, and certain Keresan tribes, as well as in most Pueblo tribes in New Mexico. In their Book “Hopi Kachinas: History, Legends, and Art” Authors Ron and Bob Pecina mention: “The Hopi say that during a great drought, they heard singing and dancing coming from the San Francisco Peaks. Upon investigation, they met the Kachinas who returned with the Hopi to their villages and taught them various forms of agriculture.”

Some time ago Erich von Däniken visited a leading Hopi Indian of the Coyote clan named White Bear, on the reservation of his people in the North American state of Arizona. In his Book “Der Tag an dem die Götter kamen” Erich von Däniken reports what White Bear has told him about the Hopis and the Kachinas: “…As with the Maya and Aztecs, the history of the Hopi also knows four world ages, the time in which we live is the fourth world age. Thousands of years ago, the Hopi ancestors lived on a continent in the Pacific region, which they called Kasskara. At that time, an intercontinental war broke out with inhabitants of another continent. During this period of Hopi history, Kasskara began to sink into the ocean – not, as in the Bible, in a 40-day deluge, but in a steady decline. Eventually, only the highest parts of Kasskara rose out of the floods, some of todays South Sea islands. The Hopi were forced to retreat. They were helped by the Katchina. White Bear explains, Katchina means “high and respected knowers”, an elite with which his people would have always had connection. The Katchina would have been physical beings from the planet Toonaotekha, which was far away from the terrestrial solar system, and they would have visited the earth again and again in intervals…”

In one of his other Books “Aussaat und Kosmos”, Erich von Däniken also mentions the following: “…In the Book of the Hopi (The first revelation of the Hopis historical and religious worldview of life) the following legend is also reported: In early times there was a battle for the Red City in the south. All the tribes, wherever they went, were accompanied by Kachinas, beings of whom it is said that they were not from the “fourth world”, the earth, indeed, they were not human beings at all, but they always proved to be protectors and advisors of the tribes and often helped them out of dicey situations with superhuman powers and arts. This was also the case in the Red City in the south, when some Hopi tribes were suddenly attacked from all sides. In no time at all, the Kachinas had built tunnels through which the Hopis could escape into the open and without bloodshed behind the fronts of the attackers. In parting, the Kachinas told the tribal chiefs, “We stay to defend the town. The time for our journey to our distant planet has not yet come!”…”

Who are these Kachina-Beings that are told about in many Hopi-Legends? Are these Beings, that still play a very important role in the Hopis culture today, spiritual beings or extraterrestrial beings?
