The stones became known and famous through the Peruvian doctor Javier Cabrera. Janvier Cabrera was born in Ica on May 13, 1924. After graduating from high school, he studied medicine in Lima, earned his doctorate there and then worked for many years at the Hospital de seguros social in Ica. As a surgeon, Cabrera repeatedly operated on poor Indians who could not afford the medical procedure. They thanked him with dusty figurines and engraved stones, which Cabrera himself originally classified as fakes. Until 1966, Cabrera did not care at all about archaeology. Only after some time, after Cabrera studied the strange motifs on the stones more intensively, did the stones begin to fascinate Cabrera. Only now did he begin to question the old peasants whom he had once helped medically and who still sought his advice. A man close to death told him the story of a “depot” where thousands of engraved stones and clay figurines were supposed to be stored.
Cabrera found other suppliers of engraved stones and over the next 35 years, Javier Carbera managed to build a collection consisting of approximately 15,000 engraved stones. The thousands of engraved stones of the collection show incredible motives. For example Dinosaurs that attack or help humans, advanced technologies like telescopes and aircrafts, advanced medical procedures like operations on the heart or brain as well as abortions, maps of North America and South America as separate continents and two other continents.
But the more intensively Cabrera studied his collection of curiosities, the more suspicious he became. And the story became even more complicate, as the the forger Basilo Uschuya had confided to a journalist named Andreas Faber-Kaiser that the engraved stones were genuine, except for the few hundred that he had imitated to sell to tourists. However, he would always publicly claim that everything was fake. Asked why he was playing this fake game, Uschuya replied: “If I sell stones with real, old engravings, i have to deal with the local Indians, and they cant take a joke when it comes to their cultural heritage. Plus, Im going straight to jail.”
Cabrera, unsure of what was “ancient” and what was “modern”, took four stones that he suspected must be old and had two surveys done. The first was done by geologist Dr. Eric Wolf of the Mauricio Hochschild mining company in Lima, and the second by the Facultad de Minas of the Lima Technical University (signed on behalf of the faculty by Dr. Fernando de la Casa and Dr. Cesar Sotillo). Both expertises confirmed the great age of the engravings. This statement was possible because the engravings were covered by a fine but natural oxidation layer, which must be many millennia old.
In 1976 Erich von Däniken visited Dr. Cabrera together with the chief designer of NASA at that time, Joseph Blumrich. Cabrera gave them four samples of ancient and modern engravings. Photos under the microscope proved the glaring difference between the false and the genuine engravings.
The case of the Cabrera stones collection is very puzzling because some of the stones could, without a doubt, be identified as fakes but for other stones in Cabreras huge collection the situation is more complicated and even contradictory. If we assume that at least some of the stones are thousands of years old, how and where did the makers of the stones get their advanced knowledge from? How could they know, for example, about dinosaurs and depict them in the presence of humans? What about the other strange depictions like flying machines and advanced surgery? And equaly imporant, Why is science not interested in doing more research about this enigma?
