Summary Report:

The ring of Brodgar belongs with 104 meters in diameter to the 3 largest stone henges in the U.K, its even larger than the famous stonehenge in Salisbury. From the original 60 stones one third is still remaining. Its astronomically aligned to the mid-winter solstice and moon-cycles. Allegedly the site is around 4500 years old. Invaders from Scandinavia reached Orkney by the 9th century, bringing a complex theology that they imposed on the preexisting Orcadian monuments; at least according to local legend. For example, the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness were allegedly known as the Temple of the Sun and Moon respectively. Also the Site is aligned through a temple called Ness of Brodgar onto another stone circle called “Stones of Stenness”. It remains a mystery how and why they truely built this sites.

Excerpt from Kasten Megan Thesis:
The Ring of Brodgar was built sometime between 2500 and 2000 B.C. (Orkneyjar 2012)
and still retains many of its original stones. Twenty-seven are still standing, and the positions of
thirteen others are known. If the stones were equally spaced, there were probably around sixty
stones erected originally. It is encircled by a henge as well, but there are two entrances that cross
this henge. It has been calculated that the ditch on its own would have taken at least 80,000 man
hours, equivalent to at least forty people working for ten years (MacSween and Sharp 1990).
