Summary Report:

To begin with, it s important to mention that the stone balls (or stone spheres) are a worldwide phenomenon. However, most of these stone balls have been found in the small Central American state of Costa Rica. In this country, hundreds if not thousands of artificial stone balls are lying around in the middle of the jungle and on high mountains, in river deltas and on hills. These balls have diameters ranging from a few centimetres to two and a half metres. The heaviest ball excavated so far weighs 16 tonnes! Most of the spheres are made of gabbro, a deep rock similar to granite, while about a dozen each are made of shell limestone and sandstone.

The archaeologist Doriz Z. Stone discovered many artificial spheres in 1940 and 1941. She wrote a detailed report about them, which ends with the resigned statement: “The spheres of Costa Rica are among the unsolved megalithic mysteries of the world.”

Erich von Däniken also researched the stone spheres in Costa Rica in detail and reports on them in his book “Zurück zu den Sternen” and during his research, he also interviewed two archaeologists he met at the Museo Nacional in San Jose. These archaeologists explained that the sphere creations were a star cult, perhaps also calendar representations or possibly also religious or magical signs.

Numerous myths and legends surround the stone balls, such as that they came from Atlantis or, in the cosmogony of the Bribri, which is shared by the Cabecares and other American ancestral groups, the stone spheres are “Tara’s cannon balls”. Tara or Tlatchque, the god of thunder, used a giant blowpipe to shoot the balls at the Serkes, gods of winds and hurricanes, in order to drive them out of these lands.

How were the stone balls created and why were they placed at specific places in Costa Rica? What was the originaly intended purpose of these stone balls? Why do we find stone balls all around the world?
