Summary Report:

Kenko Grande (also Kenko or Qenqo) is an archaeological site in Peru near the city of Cusco. The name comes from the Quechua word “Qinqu” meaning “labyrinth” or “the winding”. Kenko is known for some of the most extensive carved rock complexes (see pictures) in the Cusco region and is located to the east of Sacsayhuaman. Archaeologists presume that Kenko served as a sanctuary for the Inca culture. But it is also relatively certain that the place was already considered a sanctuary before the Incas and was probably adapted and further developed by them.

Not much is known about this place but Erich von Däniken reports the following about it in his book “Unmögliche Wahrheiten”: “… Kenko is an incomprehensible stone structure attributed to the creator god Viracocha. “Kenko” means “full of twists and turns,” and thats exactly how the megalithic behemoth presents itself. Rock walls over three meters high, sloping slightly forward, are polished smooth. Above these walls are steps cut out of the rock, niches, angles, rondels, for which no one has an explanation. In between are rock crevices with walls cut out, bitts and gradations. The Kenko Grande in its original form must have been something quite different from what it presents today…”. Erich von Däniken continues: “… Abruptly carved out rock monstrosities lie above fissures and rock grottos. In amazement, one stands in front of cut and polished walls that do not make the slightest sense in their present position. As if shaken by some elemental force, grottoes and polished tunnel entrances are interrupted in their formerly straight course, destroyed, pushed into each other…. There lie megalithic riddles that do not fit into any common scheme. No walls, no ledges that would make sense in any order. Surfaces as smooth as concrete, where the wooden boarding was removed a month ago, end in natural rock. Other passages at inverted steps running along the ceiling. But these stairs are not walkable at all – no man can walk on his head, sticking to the ceiling…. There is no shame in admitting that you dont know something. One does not know anything about the rock workings described here. The whole complex has been built with a method not known to us at a time not known to us by beings not known to us…”.

As with many other ancient and mysterious sites, there s no rational explanation from experts for what purpose these strange megalithic structures have been built. We can only wonder and ask ourselfes how and why this site was originaly built and also by whom, because, as already mentioned before, archaeologists believe that the site most probably already existed a long time before the appearance of the Inca-culture.
