Summary Report:

The archaeological site of Lepenski Vir is located in the Djerdap Gorge, on the low Danube terrace. It is the center of one of the most important prehistoric cultures. At the site of Lepenski Vir, the remains of sacral architecture were discovered from 7000 to 6000 years before the new era. What Lepenski Vir makes famous today and recognizable in the world are discoveries that are chronologically linked to the Mesolithic. Planned lifted settlements with habitats and sanctuaries of the trapezoidal base, necropolises that point to special funeral rituals, monumental stone sculptures and numerous finds of bones and stone testify that this site was not only a settlement, but also a sacral center. At the time when it was discovered, Lepenski Vir was an isolated phenomenon, and this situation did not change significantly until today. Unlike other parts of Europe, in which there are only scarce testimonies of the Mesolithic, remains of Lepenski Vir have been found that enable the complete reconstruction of culture, art and society of that period.

Archaeoastronomical research was also carried out at the site of Lepenski Vir. The first archaeoastronomical surveys were conducted during the winter solstice in 2014. They pointed to the possibility of a “double sunrise” occurring during the summer solstice. The volcanic hill Treskavac, which is located across the Danube from Lepenski Vir, has a rocky outcropping near the top and an inclination higher than the inclination of the Suns apparent orbit. The Sun appears above Treskavac, then goes behind the outcropping and reappears again. The phenomenon was observed and confirmed during the summer solstice of 2015. The phenomenon was investigated by Pavlović and Aleksandra Bajić, who published their findings in 2016 book “The Sun of Lepenski Vir”. The results show that the “double sunrise” was visible from the northernmost part of the settlement. Viewed from the southernmost part, the summer solstice Sun rose on the southern part of the flattened top of Treskavac. So, the whole settlement was accurately measured with respect to the astronomical event.

The people of Lepenski Vir also depicted strange “Fish-like Beings” in their scupltures. Was this due to the close proximity of the site to river Danube and the sculptures represent some kind of “God of the River” or maybe even perceived ancestors which were half human, half fish?
