Summary Report:

Black Mountain consists of huge, black Granite Boulders, pilled precouriously one on top of the other. Called “Kalkajaka”, or “Mountain of Death” by the local Aborigines, black Mountain with it s numerous dark Passageways and Caverns is considered a cursed and evil Place. Elder Aborigines told their Children that when they enter the Black-Mountain-Caves, they will not return. Many People have been disappeared in the Black Mountains, even Rescue-Teams vanished in the Mountains.
Some Adventurers have tried to solve the Secrets of Black-Mountain, but many Caves and tunnels only lead to Dead Ends. In the “Sydney Mail” newspaper from April 24, 1935 the following is reported:
“The disappearances read more like chapters from a book of fairy-tales, and they constitute one of the most amazing stories in the police history of the Far North, for not one of the mysteries has been solved, and probably never will be. When the Cook Highway is continued from Port Douglas to Cooktown the road will pass close to the Black Mountain, and this grim pile of granite slabs should prove of interest to geologists and others, in view of the fact that the aborigines declare that the mountain was erected years ago by a now defunct tribe of giants! There is some beautiful country around the mountain — dense forest teeming with marvellous bird and insect life.

According to the Aborigines, the Black Mountains are sacred and holy because of the Rainbow-Serpent which supposedly lives in the Black-Mountains. If the Rainbow-Serpent gets disturbed by somebody, she may turn against you.
