Summary Report:

Matiate is an archaeological site that was discovered by chance in 2020 below the city of Midyat in Turkey. Archaeologists believe that the site has been in use for more than 1900 years and that at its peak it housed more than 70000 people. The site is considered the largest man-made cave in the world.
So far, about 100 meters and 49 rooms of the tunnel have been archaeologically explored. Experts believe that the rooms discovered so far represent only about 3% of the entire complex.
So far, more than 40 such underground sites have already been discovered in Turkey. One of them is the world famous Derin Kuyu, the other is Kaymakli.
What all these sites have in common is that the time of origin of all these underground sites is disputed. Some archaeologists believe that the Hittites were the builders over 4000 years ago. Others assume that Christians built the cities to protect them from persecutors. What is certain is that only the Christian inhabitants between the 6th and 10th centuries gave the complexes their present form.

However, three big questions remain. When and for what purpose was the underground complex originally built and what method or technical devices were used to create such a massive underground complex.
