Summary Report:

The Sakafune-ishi stonework lies in Asuka, Japan. Many mysterious artifacts at ancient sites can be found in this area, originating maybe from the associated culture of the Asuka Period (A.D. 592-700). Nearby strange other stones are the „Kameisha“ megalith or the „Masuda Iwafune“ stone weighing around 800 tons of which their purpose is completely unknown as well the site of Itabuki palace ruins or the Ishibutai tomb.

At approximately weighing 100 tons the purpose of the Sakafune-ishi stonework is unknown. The Sakafuneishi stone is a huge 5.5-meter-long, up to 2.3 meters wide, and 1 meter thick granite rock with pits and channels chiseled out in it. Unfortunately it has been damaged during road construction before the 2nd world war. Nearby, a short way down the hill, is the Tortoise-Shaped Stone Structure, which was apparently used to hold and release water

Theories exist as it has been used for rice polishing, religious rituals, making sake wine, an astronomical tool or representing a kind of map. A pattern carved in the stone may be related to the position of the sun during the spring and autumn equinoxes.

According to the Asuka Japan Heritage Promotion Committee the stone is being linked to the legend of Empress Saimei (Empress Kōgyoku) in where it is said she performed fertility rites and other ceremonies at the site. The legend says she set up a tower near Mebuchi waterfall in the upstream region of the Asuka river and there she prayed for rain. All of a sudden, heavy rains fell. The people praised the empress for her perfect virtue.

This stonework and the entire area with other mysterious sites and artifacts nearby are a great mystery.
