Summary Report:

This structure is called the unfinished pyramid or Baka pyramid, assigned to the 3rd dynasty.. It is listed as pyramid number XIII in Karl Lepsius list of pyramids (1842). In 1904 Alessandro Barsanti made the first excavations at this side. He discovered a huge pit in the centre of a rectangular superstructure. This pit is most interesting, its dimensions being: 28 m long, 4,50 m wide and 19 m deep. The pit was filled with limestone blocks from a enclosure wall. During the excavation a staircase was found which leads to the bottom of the pit. Fife monolithic granit blocks surrounded by limestone blocks form the pavement of the great pit of Zawyet el-Aryan. A large oval tank is carved out of one granit block (sarcophagus). As Barsanti discovered the oval tank it was protected with lime and clay surrounded by limestone blocks which wrapped the tank as a kind of insulating building. The lid was plastered to the tank, inside was nothing except a 10 cm black band lining the side walls. There wasn´t just one layer of fine cut stones building up the floor there where four layers in total (up to 26 m depth). Why did they build such a massive floor of interlocking blocks like a complicated puzzle? Unfortunately Barsanti displaced a lot of stones and never put them back into place. Today the pit is nearly forgotten and a military area is built around this site. In the movie: “The land of the Pharaohs” 1955 is a short scene in which the pit is shown. Was it really an unfinished pyramid or did it had an another function such as astronomical or technical ?
