The Carnac stones (Breton: Steudadou Karnag) are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites near the south coast of Brittany in northwestern France, consisting of more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones which were hewn from local granite and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany and form the largest such collection in the world. There are three major groups of stone rows – Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan. They may have once formed a single group but have been split up as stones were possibly removed for other purposes. Archaologists suggest that the stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as early as 4500 BC.
Erich von Däniken and other researchers have suggested that the ancient Carnac site was built according to higher geometry principles. In his Book “Grüsse aus der Steinzeit”, Erich von Däniken mentions: “… The western cromlech at Le Ménec includes two Pythagorean triangles whose sides are in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5 to each other….” and: “… If one extends the trapezoidal sides of the “Hune Tomb” Le Manio I, they meet at a distance of 107 meters at an angle of 27 degrees. Exactly the same triangles with the same diagonals of 107 meters and the same aspect ratios of 5 : 12 : 13 appear several times in the stone settings at Carnac…”. Erich von Däniken also points out that there are other questions regarding the site: “… However, this is not only about applied geometry, but also about the spherical shape of the earth, the division of degrees, the azimuths, the organization, the planning, the transport of stones and much more. Dr. Bruno Kremer points out an angle of 53 degrees 8 minutes anchored in a Pythagorean triangle with the aspect ratio 3 : 4 : 5. The 53 degrees 8 minutes correspond “quite exactly to the azimuth of the sunrise in the summer solstice at all locations of the latitude of Carnac”.
What was the original intended purpose of this massive megalithic site? How could people from the neolithic periode possibly know about these higher geometrical principles thousands of years before Pythagoras?
