Summary Report: 

The Sete Cidades National Park is a national park in the state of Piaui, Brazil. Sete Cidades translated means: “Seven cities”.

In his book “Aussaat und Kosmos” Erich von Däniken writes: “… Archaeological finds in Brazil are mostly due to the luck, diligence and enthusiasm of amateurs. Archaeology is everyones hobby in Brazil. Professional archaeologists, however, are rare in this country. If such opulent finds were known elsewhere, university institutes would commission research or governments would provide funding for expertly led excavation teams. Here, its all different. If, for example, a prehistoric forgotten city has been precisely located and can even be reached with appropriate vehicles, it takes years before money is available to equip a modern expedition. All too often, the final word is: too late!..”. Thats why the site of the sete cidades is poorly researched and not much is known about it.

But Erich von Däniken didn t give up and did some own research about the mysterious place. In the same book as mentioned before, Erich von Däniken writes the following: “… Sete Cidades, that is one monstrous chaos like the biblical Gomorrah, destroyed with fire and sulfur from heaven. Rocks are destroyed, dried up, melted by apocalyptic forces. And it must have been a long, long time since the fiery blazes raged here. No man has ever dug here. Here, science has never attempted to remove layer after layer of the stony primordial past. Here, bizarre stone forms, articulated monstrosities shoot out of the ground like question marks. On the “official” map, which was made of Sete Cidades, the categorization of the “ruins” into seven districts can be clearly seen. Coincidence? Freak of nature? I am not able to consider so much purposeful order as a result of playful natural forces. Rather, it seems to me that there was a precise plan behind this order. But I was particularly puzzled by the crumbly mass of metal that emerges from between the layers of rock, its traces of rust dripping down the walls in long tears. In all the chaos, this feature recurs too often and too regularly…” and Erich von Däniken adds: “… It is possible that there is a geological explanation for the “turtle”, a very strange stone formation (see pictures) and the special attraction of Sete Cidades. Unfortunately, due to lack of research, nothing is known for sure…”.

And even if the origin of the seven cities is still unclear, the rock paintings in the area are certain facts: you can see them, touch them and photograph them. Erich von Däniken writes about the many different rock paintings (see pictures): “… Striking are the red-yellow circles, which have an unmistakable signal character. Curiously (and so far without comparison), is a technical ground plan which can be compared to the shape of a test tube, in the lower half of which two signal pennants can be seen. Another illustration shows five ovals lined up on a stout 32-centimeter-high, blood-red pole. There is a line where four balls dangle below, like note heads. Since prehistoric people didnt know musical notation, another graphically represented message must be involved. There is, almost a counterpart, an ancient Indian relief, which shows nine “note heads” below and two above the center line. Indian researchers identified the relief on the basis of Sanskrit texts as a representation of a Vimana, a flying device. Quite remarkable also seems to me a flying machine, as if drawn by a childs hand. Prehistoric painters stylized everything they saw in an amazingly simple way. The most peculiar and impressive painting for me is a wall with astronauts: two figures with round helmets, above them hovers a thing that fantasists would call a UFO. Between the figures winds a spiral, next to it is a structure reproduced, which imposes no limits on the interpretive imagination. Last but not least a primitive drawing showing an astronaut in a complete space suit. With Ernst von Khuon I ask the question: Were the gods astronauts? Really strange and (so far) inexplicable is the finding place of these rock paintings. All rockpaintings presented here are floating at a height of eight meters on a wall that is difficult to access. I think that the painters (if there were no giants!) stood on a platform of stone blocks during their work. But this pedestal must have weathered over the millennia, there is not the slightest crumb of it under the high wall. The weathering of the stone pedestal could be an indication of the high age of the rock paintings of Sete Cidades…”.

Because there s not much research done in the past, most of the information here was obtained by Erich von Däniken and his and his tireless research. Coult it be that the mysterious sete cidades are indeed remains of a very old, yet unknown culture? Do the strange rock paintings show a visitation by the so called “gods” in the deep past? It is of utter importance that more research is done about this place.
