Summary Report:

The Osiris Shaft is one of many shafts on the Giza Plateau. It is situated between the Valley Temple and the Khafre Pyramid the entrance is underneath the Khafre Causeway. In 1933 Selim Hassan discovered this shaft, at this time the lower part was flooded with water. In 1999 Zahi Hawass did a full scale excavation ( FOX TV Opening the last tobs) and they pumped out the water. There are 3 shafts and 3 chambers up to a depth of 30m. These shafts and chambers were carved out of the bedrock, one can still see the parallel working marks ( very similar to a lot of ancient places all over the world). The first chamber in 4m depth measures 2,5 x 6m. The second chamber is 14m deeper below and has 6 niches in two of them precisely cutted stone sarcophagi can be found. One is made out of dacit, which cannot be found in Egypt. How did they transport and move them into this chamber? The second sarcophagus is made out of red granite and behind it there is supposed to be a tunnel leading in the direction of the Sphinx. Today the tunnel is not visible because the entrance is blocked by the sarcophagus. The 3rd chamber in a depth of 30m is unfortunately floodet with water today. One can barely see a lid of a massive granite sarcophagus. In the middle oft the chamber a rectangular structure is carved out of the bedrock with the granite sarcophagus in the centre, 4 columns once surrounded the structure. In the eastern wall there is a tunnel in the direction of the Khufu Pyramid. This tunnel is yet not completely discovered because the tunnel narrows ( 40x40cm) after a few meters. Today the tunnel is also flooded and no further exploration takes place. In his Histories Book II Herodotus describes a very similar shaft system wich was known as the tomb of Khufu. The astonishing Osiris Shaft is just one of many shafts on the Giza Plateau a lot of mysterys are waiting to be hopefully one day discovered.
