Summary Report:

On the Island of Mallorca and Menorca there are strange towers called talaiots. They were probably build
between 1,300 and 123 BC. by the Talaiotic culture. They have a thick wall with mostly a central
chamber. The purpose of these limestone towers is not really clear. They could have been watchtowers or
used fore storage, even religious ceremonies could have taken place. Most towers are circular in plan,
but there are also square ones. Interestingly, they have two small entrances on each side. You have to
crawl to enter the tower, why was that? At a few places the talaiot is the oldest building in the center of a
later settlement built around the tower. One such example can be found near the town of Artá, called
Ses Païsses. On the Island of Menorca there are even older buildings called Naveta, a prehistoric burial
site. The talaiots of Mallorca partly resemble the towers of the Nuaraghen in Sardinia, but officially
there is no connection.
