Summary Report: 

During excavations, around archaeologist Letty Ingrey of University College London, several hand axes were found at the Maritime Academy, Frindsbury, two o can be classified as “giant hand axes”. The artifacts were recovered from fluvial deposits in the Medway Valley and are believed to date to marine isotope stage 9 of the Interglacial. Excavators discovered a total of 800 stone tools and artifacts dating to more than 300,000 years ago.
Among the artifacts were several hand axes recovered directly from the river deposits. The hand axes include two very large or “giant” hand axes. Both are “ficrons” with long and finely worked points and much thicker and coarsely worked stumps. The first, registered find (RF) 50 has a length of 230 mm, but lacking the tip. It was recovered from a sand unit on the surface of the fluvial deposits. The most significant find, is an even longer hand axe (RF 53) with a length of 296 mm.
This is the largest hand axe ever discovered in UK.
Quote Ingrey: “These hand axes are so large that one can hardly imagine how they could have been held in the hand and used practically.”
