Summary Report:

The Barabar Hill Caves are situated in the twin hills of Barabar (four caves) and Nagarjuni (three caves) in the Makhdumpur region of the Jehanabad district in Bihar, India.
The Lomas-Rishi cave consists of two rooms, a rectangular room measuring 9.86×5.18m, and a circular, semi-hemispherical room 5m in diameter.
The Sudama cave consists of two rooms, a rectangular room measuring 9.98×5.94m, and a semi-hemispherical room 6m in diameter.
The Karan-Chaupar cave consists of a single rectangular room with polished surfaces, 10.2×4.27m in dimensions.
The Visvakarma cave consists of a rectangular room entirely open to the outside, a sort of elongated porch, and an unfinished semi-hemispherical room: the rectangular space measures 4.27×2.54m, and the circular room is 2.8m in diameter.
The Gopika cave consists of a single large oblong room of 13.95×5.84m.
The Vadathika cave consists of a single rectangular room sized 5.11×3.43m, with a porch at the entrance of 1.83×1.68m.
The Vapiyaka cave consists of a single rectangular room of dimensions 5.10×3.43m.

They are thought to date back to the 3rd century BCE during the Maurya period, and to correspond respectively to Ashoka (reigned 273–232 BCE) and his grandson, Dasharatha Maurya. The caves at Barabar and Nagarjuni are the earliest examples of rock-cut architecture in India and most of them consist of two chambers, carved entirely out of very hard granite, with a highly polished internal surface, the so called “Mauryan polish” also found on sculptures, and exciting accoustic resonance effects.

Scientists are still not sure how the caves have been carved out of the very hard granite rock and how they achieved such a “mirror-like” polish of the cavewalls (see picture section). Another mystery is the fact that the caves resonate to very specific frequencies and would therefor had to been built with a very high knowledge in accoustics and architecture.

Just recently, the BAM- (Builders of the ancient mysteries) research team did some very elaborate research at the caves including 3D-laserscans and archaeoaccoustic measurement. They found out that the architecture of the caves is very precise in their dimensions (2 to 8 milimeters on a length of more than 13 meters) and subsequent builders have never managed to achieve the same level of precision and finish again. We can see this mysterious fact in many places around the world, where the oldest structures are often the most precise and perfect. The accoustic properties of the caves are also highly sophisticated because the shape of the caves leads to a suppression of the echo in the caves in favor of accoustic resonance. The caves behave like resonance chambers and tests show that when you are standing in the center of the room, certain frequencies make precise body parts vibrate. The Karan Chopar cave resonates at a frequencies of 200 Hz, 400 Hz, 800 Hz, 1000 Hz and 1200 Hz. The Gopika cave resonates at 200 Hz, 400 Hz, 800 Hz and 1200 Hz. The Vadathika cave resonates at 200 Hz and 1000 Hz. Could these resonant vibrations be comparable to the acoustic chamber in the Hypogeum in Malta where a scientist found out that the vibrations can influence human consciousness? It s also important to mention that the caves are located on a discontinuity-point of the earths crust.
